چکیده

A sensible quality is a perceptible property, a property that physical objects (or events) perceptually appear to have. Thus smells, tastes, colors and shapes are sensible qualities. An egg, for example, may smell rotten, taste sour, and look cream and round.1,2 The sensible qualities are not a miscellanous jumble—they form complex structures. Crimson, magenta, and chartreuse are not merely three different shades of color: the first two are more similar than either is to the third. Familiar color spaces or color solids capture, to a greater or lesser extent, these relations between the colors. The same goes for sensible qualities perceived in other modalities: middle C, high C, and D are not merely three different notes, and the taste of lemons, oranges, and sugar cubes are not merely three different tastes. How can this structure of appearance be explained? One idea is that sensible qualities are of two sorts: basic and derived. The basic sensible qualities are the building blocks from which the derived sensible qualities can be

Sensory Qualities, Sensible Qualities, Sensational Qualities

In theorizing about perception, philosophers have often multiplied qualities. To perceptible qualities of external objects, like colors and shapes (‘sensible’ qualities), have been added qualities of experiences (‘sensory’ qualities) or of sense-data (‘sensational’ qualities). Start with sensory qualities. The phrase ‘sensory quality’ is not much in use these days, having lost out to ‘phenomena...

Mechanistic prospective for human PrPC conversion to PrPSc: Molecular dynamic insights

PrPC conversion to PrPSc isoform is the main known cause for prion diseases including Crutzfeldt-Jakob, Gerstmann-Sträussler-Sheinker syndrome and fatal familial insomnia in human. The precise mechanism underling this conversion is yet to be well understood. In the present work,  using the coordinate file of PrPC (available on the Protein Data Bank) as a starting structure, separate molecular d...

Leibniz on the Metaphysics of Color∗

Drawing on remarks scattered through his writings, I argue that Leibniz has a highly distinctive and interesting theory of color. The central feature of the theory is the way in which it combines a nuanced subjectivism about color with a reductive approach of a sort usually associated with objectivist theories of color. After reconstructing Leibniz’s theory and calling attention to some of its ...

A Study of Relationship Between Color Inconstancy Level and CIELAB Color Coordinates

In commercial point of view, it is of great interest to find colors with high color constancy level. Color constancy as a relatively property of object’s appearance could be affected by different factors. In this article, the color inconstancy index of CMCCON02 and CIELAB color coordinate of 1269 samples of Munsell at CIELchº color system to study any correlations, was calculated. The correspon...

T·he Soils of the Sugar Belt: a Classification and a Review

In the first place, we have to piece together the bits and pieces which most resemble each other. As there are a number of qualities common to obviously unrelated pieces in our puzzle, we select certain basic patterns, and group the pieces together according to those basic patterns, irrespective of whether they have qualities which, on first appearance, do not appear to be reserved to anyone gr...
